This game kicks off Group C’s action on Saturday at Estàdio Mineirão in Belo Horizone with each side desperate to get off to a winning start. Group C of the World Cup has been described as the ‘Group of Opportunity’ as there are four teams looking to make noise, however, they will not face any super footballing nations to do so. Both Colombia and Greece are not traditional big name footballing nations yet they believe they have enough quality to qualify for the knockout stages. This match could set the pace for both teams’ campaign.
The two sides come into this fixture with strong campaigns in qualifiers and have been pretty settled in the lead-up to the World Cup, except for the disruption that Radamael Falcao’s injury had on Colombia’s preparation.
Nonetheless, Colombia are seen as one of the dark horses in the tournament as Jose Pekerman has led Los Cafeteros to their first ever World Cup in 16 years and had the squad finish second in the CONMEBOL qualifiers sitting just two points behind leaders Argentina.
Colombia was hit hard by injury to their star forward and prolific hitman Radmael Falcao who ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament and was ruled out of the tournament. They will be looking to midfielders James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado and striker Jackson Martinez to fill his void.
Greece on the other hand finished second in their qualifier group behind Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was considerably than other qualifier groups. Despite beating Bolivia 2-1 in friendlies, their 0-0 draws with Nigeria was unimpressive and stale. Manager Fernando Santos knows his team will have to show more if they are to be competitive and progress to the knockout stages.
Despite remaining injury free however the defensive-minded Greeks will have limited room for error with Olympiakos centre-backs Dimitris Siovas and Sokratis Papasthathopoulous crucial given Greece’s limited scoring ability.
